Leek - Belle Vue ground : Map credit National Library of Scotland Leek and Moorlands Bicycle Club was formed by William Thomas Cook in August 1876, Cook was the first club captain and they met at the Old Plough Vaults in St Edward Street. The club changed its name to Leek Bicycle Club in June 1879, then to Leek Cyclists' Club in 1883 when tricycles were admitted.

Sports were held in the 1890s at locations referred to as Mr Magnier's field, Belle Vue Road and the Agricultural Showground. It is difficult to pin-point the exact locations, but I assume that they were both on Belle Vue Road.

Leek Floral and Horticultural Society annual show was held on 1894 August 31st and September 1st at Mr Magnier's field on Belle Vue Road. There were exhibitions of cheese, butter and honey as well as a horse leaping competition, which offered £40 in prizes. The local amateur sports associated with the show included the Leek Cyclists' Club annual five miles championship race for a cup and medals. The Leek Temperance Prize Brass Band played at the meeting.

Leek Football Club held their 3rd annual sports meeting on September 17th 1898 at the Agricultural Showground. There were running races and six bicycle races. Harry Moorhouse was the most successful local competitor, winning the Leek Clarion one mile and the Leek Cyclists Club five miles championship cup races. The large prize list of £60 attracted riders from outside the local area, AV Roe of Bolton won the two miles open handicap and E Sherratt of Stoke won the one mile open handicap. There were complaints in the press that the ground was very poor and deeply rutted. The Leek Volunteer Band provided musical entertainment. The sports made a profit of £47 which went into the football club funds. Admission to the ground was sixpence, on the higher ground one shilling and in the stands one shilling and sixpence.

Leek Cyclists' Club is still a very active club. They have retained all their club records and membership list from 1876, when it was formed, to the present day.
